Having a maritime vocation, Algeria benefits from a coastline extending around 1200 km along the Mediterranean Sea and roughly 9.5 million hectares dedicated to fishing, demonstrate the country’s potential for fisheries production. The fishing sector is a vital component of the Algerian economic growth. In recent years, the sector has become a leading employment sector for a large section of the coastal population.
In order to improve the availability of fishery products in the national market, the sector is currently working to support the aquaculture development program. Algeria hopes to tap into the huge aquifers beneath the Sahara that covers about 80% of the country, as a way to complement maritime fishing. More recently, Algeria has put in place a national strategy for maritime fishing and aquaculture by 2030, and a plan for the development of maritime fishing and aquaculture activities by 2025.
